- Sun – Over time, the UV (ultraviolet) rays cause the elastin in skin to break down. This results in wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots. Too much exposure to the sun or use of tanning booths can lead to cell deterioration and skin cancer.
- Cigarette smoke – Second only to sun damage, smoking causes the skin age faster than anything else. Free radicals are formed in the body and cause the skin to turn gray, pale and wrinkled. Many wrinkles around the mouth and eyes can be attributed to the acts of sucking on the cigarette and then squinting to keep the smoke from getting in the eyes.
- Age – It is part of our physiology that age dries our skin. In addition, less collagen is produced the elasticity of the skin is gradually lost.
- Poor diet – Our bodies require certain vitamins and minerals in order to be healthy and able to fight infection and illness. If we do not eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water, our body can quickly lose its ability to look and respond as it should. This, in turn, can leave our skin discolored, thin and pale or gray.
