What Happens to our Skin as We Age?

As we age, our skin naturally will age with us. What we do and how we live will also affect how our skin looks with each passing year. For example, if you are a smoker, the constant inhaling and squinting actions will increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth, nose and eyes. In addition, the smoke in your body will reduce the production of oxygen to the blood stream. A lack of oxygen in the blood stream means your skin may develop a sickly pallor.

If you spend time in the sun without the benefit of sunscreen, you are likely to develop spots which can become skin cancer. The sun’s UV rays draw moisture out of the skin leaving it dry, brittle and leathery-looking over time.

High levels of stress, gravity and sleep also contribute to skin damage as we age. A loss of elasticity in the skin will cause jowls to sag and skin will hang loosely. A natural process of the outer layer of skin thinning can leave it looking almost transparent. Along with this, the blood vessel walls thin and our skin tends to bruise easier.

Eating well, exercising regularly, drinking lots of water and using sunscreen when you are outside will all help in keeping your skin healthier longer. For many, skin care treatments are used to help remove and repair unhealthy skin, especially on the face and neck.
