KERATOSIS PILARIS

Now that warmer weather is here it’s time to start thinking about wearing shorts, bathing suits, short-sleeve shirts and tank tops. Most of the population panic when thinking of wearing more revealing clothes in the summer and wonder how to lose that extra winter weight they gained, but for some it’s because of how their skin looks on their arms and thighs. Millions of people suffer from a condition called keratosis pilaris (KP), which can look like a rash or resemble goose bumps. It primarily appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on the thighs and buttocks. Keratosis pilaris is totally harmless, but the millions who suffer from this condition cringe when they think of summer time.

Keratosis pilaris occurs as excess keratin, a natural fibrous protein found normally in hair and nails, accumulates around the hair follicles. It is characterized by small red bumps, sometimes with white in them, that are raised on the skin like goose bumps. They can look a lot like pimples, but they are not pimples. KP is a chronic, genetic follicular disease, however treatments are available. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are the most common professional treatments available. There are also some topical medications and skin care products that can be used at home to treat KP as well.

If you are one of the millions who suffer from this condition I hope you find comfort in knowing that there are treatments available for you. Don’t hesitate to call Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center today for your free consultation and skin analysis. You can soon be on your way to healthier looking skin.
