WINTER SKIN

Your skin care routine can change from season to season, just like your wardrobe. You wouldn’t wear your heavy wool sweater in the middle of the summer, so it makes sense that your skin care products that work great in the summer may not be so great in the winter. Why? Because our skin acts like a barrier to protect our inner organs and can take a beating from the elements like the heat and cold, especially when going from extreme heat in the summer to air conditioning or extreme cold in the winter to the heated indoors.

Now that the cold weather has arrived our indoor heaters are running nonstop. When it’s cold outside we spend more time indoors, which is a very dry environment created by indoor heating. This is what causes moisture loss in our skin. As a result your skin may feel tight, dry, irritated, itchy or painful, and it may even get flakey or even crack.

Luckily, there are several things that you can do to ease the discomfort of winter dry skin.
  • Use a gentle cleanser without harsh, drying ingredients.
  • Use a heavier moisturizer and apply more often.
  • Slather on the sunscreen. Sun glare off of snow can be more damaging than sun glare in the summer. Colorado residents should be using SPF 30 or higher every day!
  • Avoid long, hot showers or baths, which can dehydrate the skin.
  • Use a humidifier to increase the humidity level inside your home.
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
