Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells, which most often develops on skin exposed to the sun. Unfortunately, skin cancer can also occur on areas of your skin not normally exposed to the sun. There are many different types of skin cancer, but the three major types are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Skin cancer can appear as a mole, lump, sore or a growth on the skin. How can you tell if an innocent-looking mole or lump may be skin cancer? The ABCD system may help you detect abnormalities that need to be examined by a physician.

· A is for asymmetry: Part of the lesion or growth looks different than the other part.
· B is for borders: The lesion or growth has irregular borders/edges.
· C is for color: The color in the lesion or growth changes from one area to another, which can include tan, brown and/or black. It can even include white, red or blue.
· D is for diameter: The lesion or growth may be larger than 6 mm (size of a pencil eraser), but not always.

In addition, any skin growth that bleeds or will not heal needs to be examined by a physician immediately.

It is important to know your risk factors, which include:

· Complexion: Skin cancer is more common in people with fair skin, light-colored hair, and light eyes including blue, grey or green.
· Genetics: A family history of skin cancer increases the risk of developing this type of cancer.
· Age: Nonmelanoma skin cancer is more common after age 40.
· Sun exposure and/or sunburn: Most skin cancers occur on areas of the skin that are exposed to sunlight or other ultraviolet radiation such as tanning beds. This is usually the primary cause of all skin cancers.

Keep in mind that anyone can develop skin cancer. Even people with dark skin, hair, and eyes.

It is important to minimize sun exposure by wearing sunscreen everyday with a SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher on all exposed skin, avoiding sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when it is the most intense, and wearing protective clothing like hats, shirts with long sleeves, long pants and skirts.

Remember, sunscreen should be applied year round, even during the winter, and have your skin checked by a physician on a regular basis to avoid bigger problems in the future. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and its main purpose is to protect your body and internal organs. It is your job to protect your skin to keep it safe, strong and healthy so it can protect your body the way it’s meant to.

Melasma the "mask of pregnancy"

Melasma is a very common skin condition, which presents as dark skin discoloration and patches that usually appear on the face. This condition is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Most women will notice melasma during pregnancy, which is why the term melasma is also known as the “mask of pregnancy.” Other causes may include birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, fluctuations in hormone levels, genetics, sun exposure, inflammation or irritation, and heat. Unprotected sun exposure can also cause melasma, or make the condition worse.

People of any race can be affected by melasma. However, melasma is more common in darker skin types than in lighter skin types, and it may be more common in light brown skin types, especially Hispanics and Asians. Although uncommon, melasma can affect men as well, but is much more common in women. Approximately 90% of melasma cases are women.

Melasma is a chronic skin disorder, but there are treatments available to improve the appearance of your skin. Topical medications which contain the ingredient hydroquinone may be prescribed in conjunction with clinical treatments such as microdermabrasion and/or chemical peels. Along with medication, daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen is mandatory when treating malasma.

Melasma is very common here in Colorado. I have helped many people improve their skin. Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center offers free skin-care consultations. You can see results as early as 4 weeks with full results in 12 – 16 weeks with Latisse!

Latisse is a prescription drug prescribed specifically to grow your own natural eyelashes, which means no more false lashes and damaging extensions. Because it is a prescription you can only purchase it through a physician. Latisse contains bimatoprost, the same active ingredient that is in the glaucoma drug Lumigan. It is important to remember that Latisse is a prescription medication, so precise application is important to avoid unnecessary complications.

The most common side effects are an itching sensation in the eyes and/or eye redness. Most people who experience these report improvement after a couple weeks of use and generally go away all together. Other less common side effects typically occur on the skin close to where Latisse is applied, or in the eyes including skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes, and redness of the eyelids. The side effects are usually mild, and the majority of people don’t find these side effects bothersome enough to discontinue treatment.

Latisse is the first and only prescription treatment approved by the FDA to enhance your own natural eyelashes to grow them longer, fuller and darker.

Latisse has helped many people by giving them the eyelashes they have always desired. Long and lush eyelashes are associated with beauty and youth. Personally, I love Latisse! I’ve been using it for approximately 1 ½ years without any bothersome side effects. I can wear my contacts everyday with no problem and the compliments I receive are priceless. No matter what your age is Latisse will work for you!

Come in or call Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center today and ask about our money-saving summer special on Latisse. Perfect for summertime! Dermaplaning, or blading, is a non-invasive medical skin treatment that not many people know about. I will let you in on the secret to beautiful, glowing skin that you can maintain all through the summer months!

Dermaplaning, or blading, is an exfoliating treatment performed using a scalpel to remove the skin’s top layer, along with facial hair, through controlled scraping. The treatment is comfortable, pain free, and no chemicals are used. Dermaplaning is a great option for those with darker skin types, because it is milder exfoliation than most chemical peels and less likely to produce changes and contrast in skin color. Daily use of sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended to reduce the risk of sunburn and hyperpigmentation (increased pigment) from unprotected sun exposure. Those with broken capillaries on the face can benefit from dermaplaning without the risk of further damage, unlike microdermabrasion, which can make the condition worse. Usually a series of 6 treatments is recommended for optimal results, but most people can see and feel a positive change in their skin after the first treatment.

After achieving your desired result, treatments can be ongoing to exfoliate the skin, remove excess facial hair and to maintain the smooth, healthy skin you acquired with dermaplaning!

Call today to schedule your free consultation and skin analysis!

SUNSCREEN

As warmer weather approaches we like to spend more time outdoors in the sun, which puts our skin at risk for pre-mature aging and skin cancer. The good news is daily application of sunscreen can help lower your risk for skin cancer and help protect your skin from looking older before its time.

Sunscreens work by absorbing, reflecting or scattering the sun’s rays on the skin. When applying sunscreen make sure all exposed areas of the skin are treated. Don’t forget your ears, hands and scalp if needed. For optimum protection sunscreen should be applied at least one-half hour before sun exposure. If outdoors for a prolonged period of time it is recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours for maximum protection.

For year-round protection the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Here in Colorado I recommend using a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 for everyone.

How is the SPF in sunscreen determined? It is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on sunscreen-protected skin to the amount of time needed to cause a sunburn on unprotected skin. The higher the SPF number, the greater protection you receive.

The bottom line is sunscreen needs to be applied everyday, 365 days a year. It doesn’t matter what your skin type is or ethnicity, everyone needs to use sunscreen to minimize the risk of skin cancer and help prevent sun-induced, pre-mature aging.

Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center carries IMAGE Skincare. They offer several different sunscreen formulas to suit your specific skin type. The IMAGE Skincare philosophy focuses on prevention and protection. I mean the vitamin C you put on your skin. Vitamin C is one of the most popular and commonly used ingredient found in anti-aging skincare products. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, everyone can benefit from using a topical vitamin C product.

Vitamin C is listed in the ingredients as L-ascorbic acid or ascorbic acid. Newer derivatives of vitamin C may be listed as ascorbyl palmitate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.

Vitamin C should be applied to the face daily. It can help protect against UV (ultraviolet) induced cell damage, which is the sun damage that causes premature aging and skin cancers. Vitamin C has been shown to stimulate collagen production, decrease wrinkle depth and have lightening effects on pigmentation.

Unfortunately, vitamin C is very unstable and can oxidize before you get it on your skin. Once oxidized it doesn’t provide any benefit to the skin at all. If your vitamin C product turns yellow it has oxidized and is no longer any good. Throw it away and start fresh with a new bottle.

Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center carries IMAGE Skincare, who offers a complete vitamin C line. The IMAGE Skincare system is available exclusively through licensed physicians and aestheticians who are highly trained and educated in individual skincare programs. You wouldn’t wear your heavy wool sweater in the middle of the summer, so it makes sense that your skin care products that work great in the summer may not be so great in the winter. Why? Because our skin acts like a barrier to protect our inner organs and can take a beating from the elements like the heat and cold, especially when going from extreme heat in the summer to air conditioning or extreme cold in the winter to the heated indoors.

Now that the cold weather has arrived our indoor heaters are running nonstop. When it’s cold outside we spend more time indoors, which is a very dry environment created by indoor heating. This is what causes moisture loss in our skin. As a result your skin may feel tight, dry, irritated, itchy or painful, and it may even get flakey or even crack.

Luckily, there are several things that you can do to ease the discomfort of winter dry skin.

Use a gentle cleanser without harsh, drying ingredients.

Use a heavier moisturizer and apply more often.

Slather on the sunscreen. Sun glare off of snow can be more damaging than sun glare in the summer. Colorado residents should be using SPF 30 or higher every day!

Avoid long, hot showers or baths, which can dehydrate the skin.

Use a humidifier to increase the humidity level inside your home.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.

If you are wondering how to change your skin care routine to better fit your winter skin call now to schedule your free consultation and skin analysis.

Ask about our money-saving winter special on microdermabrasion, chemical peels and dermaplaning.

5280 Microdermabrasion

Come help us celebrate the "Mile High City" and Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center's first appearance on 9News Colorado & Company on Monday, November 2!

To celebrate I'm offering the "5280 ($52.80) microdermabrasion" to anyone who mentions this blog or Colorado & Company. It has been proven that sugar consumption can actually cause the development of wrinkles. Scientific data shows that there are certain processes within the body correlated with sugar consumption that can speed up the skin’s natural aging process and cause loss of firmness, fine lines and wrinkles. This is the body’s natural glycation process. During this reaction the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins that develop damaging new molecules called advanced glycation end products, also known as AGE’s. The more sugar you eat, more AGE’s are formed, and they begin to damage neighboring cells.

Collagen and elastin are proteins in the skin responsible for firmness and elasticity. Unfortunately, they are most vulnerable to this type of damage from sugar intake. When collagen and elastin are damaged the skin starts to sag and wrinkles begin to form.

Sugar consumption can also change what type of collagen your body contains. The most liberal types of collagen are types I, II, and III. Type III is the most firm and resilient. The process of glycation can change type III into type I, which is softer and more fragile.

There are ways to help counteract this process of sugar-related pre-mature aging. For example: Eating more antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables, increasing your intake of vitamins B1 and B6, applying topical retinols (vitamin A and derivatives), and wearing sunscreen every day.

Limiting sugar intake is important to not only maintain a healthy body weight, but to also maintain healthy skin. If you want more information about counteracting sugar-induced skin aging call Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center now for your free consultation and skin analysis.

KERATOSIS PILARIS

Now that warmer weather is here it’s time to start thinking about wearing shorts, bathing suits, short-sleeve shirts and tank tops. Most of the population panic when thinking of wearing more revealing clothes in the summer and wonder how to lose that extra winter weight they gained, but for some it’s because of how their skin looks on their arms and thighs. Millions of people suffer from a condition called keratosis pilaris (KP), which can look like a rash or resemble goose bumps. It primarily appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on the thighs and buttocks. Keratosis pilaris is totally harmless, but the millions who suffer from this condition cringe when they think of summer time.

Keratosis pilaris occurs as excess keratin, a natural fibrous protein found normally in hair and nails, accumulates around the hair follicles. It is characterized by small red bumps, sometimes with white in them, that are raised on the skin like goose bumps. They can look a lot like pimples, but they are not pimples. KP is a chronic, genetic follicular disease, however treatments are available. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are the most common professional treatments available. There are also some topical medications and skin care products that can be used at home to treat KP as well.

If you are one of the millions who suffer from this condition I hope you find comfort in knowing that there are treatments available for you. Don’t hesitate to call Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center today for your free consultation and skin analysis. You can soon be on your way to healthier looking skin.

The MAX

Are you one of the millions struggling with stubborn wrinkles, crows feet and overall aging skin? When you over cleanse your skin you can strip your skin of the oils that keep it healthy and balanced. People with oily skin tend to over cleanse in the effort to get rid of the shiny, oily appearance of the skin. Oily skin can actually become more oily with over cleansing, because it can trigger a panic response and send your oil glands into overdrive to compensate for the “over stripping” that over cleansing may cause. In turn, oily skin becomes shinier and can actually produce more breakouts if you are acne prone. Dry skin can become flakey and irritated making you look older and more tired than you actually are. Nobody wants that!

Here are the top 5 face cleansing errors:

· Cleansing too often – No matter what your skin type, cleanse no more than twice a day with a cleanser appropriate for your skin type.
· Using too much cleanser – Dilute a small amount of cleanser with water and lather it up in the palm of your hand before applying it to your face.
· Using products that are too harsh for your skin – If your skin feels dry and tight on a regular basis your products are too harsh for your skin type. Switch to milder ingredients and consult with your skin care specialist.
· Using products too harshly – Abrasive scrubs, over scrubbing, and products with exfoliating acids, such as glycolic and salicylic acids should be used 1-2 times a week. Daily use may cause blotchy, red, flaky skin or even broken capillaries.
· Not enough rinsing – Make sure your cleanser is thoroughly removed. Just when you think you are done rinsing, rinse three more times to make sure no residue is left behind.

Do you think you may be an “over cleanser?” Call today for a free consultation and skin analysis. I can show you the proper way to cleanse and recommend skin care products that are appropriate and compliment your individual skin type. You deserve to look as good as you feel!

Hyaluronic Acid

What is hyaluronic acid (HA)? It is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), which is a substance that attaches to collagen and elastin to form cartilage. Hyaluronic acid not only helps keep the cartilage that cushions joints strong and flexible, but also helps increase joint-lubricating synovial fluid.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is present in every tissue of the body. It has many functions including stimulating the tissue’s water retention capabilities. It can help provide nutrients and remove waste from cells that do not have a direct blood supply, such as cartilage.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is gaining popularity in the cosmetic and medical industries. HA is found in many anti-aging/anti-wrinkle serums and creams as one of the “active ingredients.” It is said to be a natural wrinkle filler since HA is capable of retaining up to 1000 times its weight in water, which means it can produce a plumping effect when applied topically to the skin that can be visible within minutes of application. Since our bodies produce HA naturally there is little to no chance of the body or skin reacting badly with it, so it is recommended for all skin types including sensitive/reactive skin. Injections of hyaluronic acid are also available to reduce the appearance of creases and wrinkles or to plump up the appearance of your lips.

Are you interested in finding out how hyaluronic acid can benefit you? Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center carries Image Skin Care products that specialize in anti-aging and corrective skin care. Many of the products contain hyaluronic acid to plump and moisturize the skin without added oils. HA is also great for acne prone skin since it can moisturize without any added pore-clogging oils. We also offer hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, which are the injections used to fill in wrinkles and creases or to plump up your pout with immediate results that can last for months and months!

We offer complimentary skin care consultations. Now is the time to shed those old habits and embrace the new and improved you.

Are you overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? It may be hard to believe that a number of women leave out one of the most important steps in a beauty and skincare regimen – washing off their makeup every night. It’s a simple, but very important step in improving your skin’s overall health. This is one New Year’s resolution that can be easy to keep all year round!

Washing your face every night isn’t just about being clean; it really does have many purposes. It can prevent blemishes and clogged pores. It can allow your skin to “breathe” and regenerate its self while you sleep. During the day we are all exposed to environmental pollutants and damaging free radicals, which can accumulate on your skin, and over time your skin may look dull and lifeless. By washing your face every night you can actually remove these potentially harmful particles and begin to see fresher, healthier skin in a short period of time. Also, according to WomensHealth.gov, leaving eye makeup on while you sleep can cause redness, irritation and infection of the eyes.

No more excuses. You only have one face to put forward, and it’s never too late to start a good habit! Happy New Year!

Is Your Stress Showing?

During the holiday season we are supposed to be happy and jolly even though we have to go to work every day, take care of our family and household, attend holiday parties, shop until you drop for holiday presents, wrap all the presents, send out holiday cards, bake cookies….All while managing the finances to make sure you can survive until the new year. It’s hard to be jolly and stay in the festive mood to give. Most of us call this time of year STRESSFUL. Sometimes I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Unfortunately, stress does a lot more than just make you cranky. It can actually wreck havoc on your skin. Stress can exacerbate problems you already have with your skin and even create more problems you haven’t experienced in the past. Stress causes the formation of the “stress hormones” adrenaline, cortisol and DHEA, which induce a range of physiological responses intended to help you survive the stress you are going through. Even though these hormones can help you through this hard time they do come with several side effects. You can experience increased oil production, reduced immune system response and increased inflammation. Symptoms can be mild to severe and can include acne flare ups, hives, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and cold sores.

There are several things you can do to reduce the effects of stress such as meditation, regular exercise, massages and making sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Maintaining a healthy diet can also help the effects of stress on your body and skin by giving it the nutrients it needs to stay strong and vibrant. Getting adequate amounts of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can be beneficial as it has anti-inflammatory properties among many other health benefits. Don’t like fish? You can get your omega-3 fatty acids in pill form, which can be purchased at any vitamin supplement retailer.

Have you taken the steps needed to reduce the amount of stress in your life, but you’re still fighting the effects of stress on your skin? Don’t worry; I can help you put your best face forward. Call me today for your free consultation and skin analysis and you will be on your way to healthier looking skin!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Turn Back Time

Have you heard the buzz? You can actually get your skin to act younger again. How? With vitamin A or “retinol.” Retinol is vitamin A in its purest and most active form. It penetrates deep into the skin where it becomes active. Fine lines and wrinkles gradually smooth while moisture and elasticity increase. Your complexion will glow and sun damage will diminish.

Retinol is also used for acne management. The increased skin exfoliation of vitamin A helps unclog pores and even out skin tone and texture.

With continued use of retinol you may notice improvements in your skin in as little as 2 weeks. Your skin tone will start to even out and you will experience a smoother appearance overall. Most people may experience an initial period of flaking skin along with some redness and sensitivity, but generally, this is nothing to be concerned about. It takes time for your skin to adjust to the vitamin A. It is helpful to start slowly and work your way up to daily use. The use of sunscreen is mandatory during the use of retinol due to increased sun sensitivity.

Are you ready to turn back time? Call me today to schedule your complimentary consultation and skin analysis!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tis the season to give, give again, and then give some more. What we do and how we live will also affect how our skin looks with each passing year. For example, if you are a smoker, the constant inhaling and squinting actions will increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth, nose and eyes. In addition, the smoke in your body will reduce the production of oxygen to the blood stream. A lack of oxygen in the blood stream means your skin may develop a sickly pallor.

If you spend time in the sun without the benefit of sunscreen, you are likely to develop spots which can become skin cancer. The sun’s UV rays draw moisture out of the skin leaving it dry, brittle and leathery-looking over time.

High levels of stress, gravity and sleep also contribute to skin damage as we age. A loss of elasticity in the skin will cause jowls to sag and skin will hang loosely. A natural process of the outer layer of skin thinning can leave it looking almost transparent. Along with this, the blood vessel walls thin and our skin tends to bruise easier.

Eating well, exercising regularly, drinking lots of water and using sunscreen when you are outside will all help in keeping your skin healthier longer. For many, skin care treatments are used to help remove and repair unhealthy skin, especially on the face and neck.

If you are considering skin care procedures such as Botox, chemical peels and others in the Denver, Cherry Creek or elsewhere in Northern Colorado, please contact us today.

Be Kissable This Winter!

Attention all men and women! Do you avoid kissing your loved one during the winter months for fear they may feel more like sandpaper than soft, supple lips? Don’t’ worry… dry, chapped, rough, peeling lips are treatable!

Colder weather means less moisture in the air outside, and the moisture zapping heater inside causes the moisture on your lips to evaporate much quicker than it would during the warmer months.

Follow these simple steps for a soft, full pout all winter long.

· Place a small amount of granulated sugar in the palm of your hand, add a couple drops of water and mix until it is a paste-like texture. Apply to your lips in a light, circular motion to exfoliate. Make sure not to apply too much pressure, which could over exfoliate and become irritated. Then rinse with cool water and immediately apply a moisturizing lip balm.

· If you do not wish to use sugar there is another option. Apply a coat of plain, unflavored yogurt to your lips and leave on for 2 minutes. Then take a baby toothbrush and softly rub your lips in small circular motions. Rinse with cool water and immediately apply a moisturizing lip balm. The lactic acid naturally found in yogurt gently softens and lifts dead skin and the soft toothbrush will gently remove the loose, dead skin from your lips giving you a soft and smooth pout.

Remember to reapply your lip balm throughout the day to prevent moisture loss. During the day it is very important to use a lip balm with at least SPF 15. Sun exposure on unprotected lips can also cause dryness and peeling. At night it is best to apply a generous amount of a repairing yet moisturizing lip balm to rejuvenate and heal while you sleep so you can wake up to soft and supple lips every morning.

Now you can stay kissable all year round!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is here! You bought the pumpkins, the candy and the costumes are ready for Halloween night. The costumes will be worn and the candy will be handed out, but what are you going to do with the pumpkins before they go bad? Before you throw them out consider pampering yourself with a rejuvenating pumpkin facial or body treatment!

Pumpkin is my favorite fall skin care ingredient. It is high in vitamins A, C, E, and has a natural enzyme to lightly exfoliate and refresh your skin while increasing moisture content. Your skin will glow and feel soft to the touch.

You will need to puree the pumpkin so it is a paste-like texture. It can be either fresh or cooked. Cooked pumpkin can lose some of its enzyme properties, but it will still have the skin-smoothing effect.

Here are a couple of pumpkin skin care recipes that are easy to make and easy to use!

REVUVENATING PUMPKIN FACE MASK

2 Tablespoons of pureed pumpkin (fresh or cooked)
1 Tablespoon of honey
A dash of milk

Mix all the ingredients together. Make sure the mix is not too liquid. It is best to keep it on the thicker side. Spread a nice, even layer over the entire face and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes. Then rinse off with warm water.

REFRESHING PUMPKIN BODY SCRUB

½ cup pureed pumpkin (Cooked is best)
½ cup brown sugar or Epsom salt.

Mix ingredients together. Make sure the mix is not too liquid and you can feel the coarseness of the sugar or salt. It is best applied in the shower when your skin is damp. Apply the scrub in a circular motion and rinse off. After drying off apply a good moisturizer.

Have a happy and safe Halloween! Don’t miss out on our buy 1, get 1 free special on all chemical peels, microdermabrasion or dermaplaning! Our skin, in fact, is the largest organ of the body, so if we are not giving it the moisture it needs the appearance can change.

One of the first signs of dehydrated skin is the development of fine lines and wrinkles. You may experience itching, tightness, flaking and scaling. It can appear reddish and dull. The best way to keep your body (and skin) hydrated is to drink pure, clean water, and plenty of it.
While the exact amount you should drink each day varies, we all know that staying hydrated plays an important role in keeping our skin healthy looking and even young. Rule of thumb is to try to drink at least eight glasses of water every day or take your total body weight, divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you should drink per day. In addition to keeping all of your cells hydrated, water helps cells move nutrients in and toxins out, which can automatically leave skin looking better. It can actually help with acne conditions and improve tone and texture of premature aging skin. And, before you go out and buy that expensive bottled water know that hard water, the kind high in minerals, is especially good. Using water softeners to de-mineralize drinking water may reduce some of the potentially helpful effects as well.

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water. By the time you feel thirst you are already dehydrated. Sip water throughout the day to avoid having to gulp down a lot of water in the evening. Nobody likes to get up during the night to run to the bathroom, so spreading out your eight glasses of water throughout your day starting in the morning should reduce the amount of nighttime interruptions.

So what are you waiting for? Get hydrated!

Factors that Damage the Skin

There are several factors that can damage our skin. They range from the effects of what we eat to how we spend our free time. Here is a list of some of these factors and how they alter our skin’s appearance:

Sun – Over time, the UV (ultraviolet) rays cause the elastin in skin to break down. This results in wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots. Too much exposure to the sun or use of tanning booths can lead to cell deterioration and skin cancer.

Cigarette smoke – Second only to sun damage, smoking causes the skin age faster than anything else. Free radicals are formed in the body and cause the skin to turn gray, pale and wrinkled. Many wrinkles around the mouth and eyes can be attributed to the acts of sucking on the cigarette and then squinting to keep the smoke from getting in the eyes.

Age – It is part of our physiology that age dries our skin. In addition, less collagen is produced the elasticity of the skin is gradually lost.

Poor diet – Our bodies require certain vitamins and minerals in order to be healthy and able to fight infection and illness. If we do not eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water, our body can quickly lose its ability to look and respond as it should. This, in turn, can leave our skin discolored, thin and pale or gray.

However, there are excellent skin care procedures available to help combat many of these areas of skin damage. They include chemical peels, Botox, and microdermabrasion, among others.

If you are considering any type of skin care treatment in the Denver, Cherry Creek or elsewhere in Northern Colorado, please contact us today.

Don't Let The Economy Bring You Down

No matter what happens with the economy, or who is elected for president, it is what makes you happy that's important. Sunscreen is the most powerful anti-aging product on the market! It makes sense to say that the best treatment for wrinkles is to avoid getting them in the first place. Unprotected sun exposure causes over 90% of wrinkles. Genetics do influence how much a person will age, but up to 90% of the wrinkles you currently have on your face are probably due to sun exposure. It can be even worse here in Colorado due to high altitude. Meaning we are much closer to the sun! Nobody like wrinkles, but that's not the only negative thing the sun can do to your skin. Unprotected sun exposure can also cause skin cancer. Most skin cancer can be prevented. You may decrease your chances of developing skin cancer and help prevent wrinkles by following these tips:

Use a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or higher. Sunscreens that say "broad-spectrum" can protect the skin from ultraviolet A and B (UVA and UVB) rays.

Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going in the sun.

Apply the sunscreen to all the skin that will be exposed to the sun, including the nose, ears, neck, scalp and lips. Sunscreen needs to be applied evenly over the skin in the amount recommended on the label. Most sunscreens are not completely effective because they are not applied correctly. It usually takes approximately 1-2 fl oz to cover an adult's body.

Apply sunscreen every 2-3 hours while in the sun and after swimming or heavy sweating. The SPF value decreases if a person sweats heavily or is in water. Anytime there is water on the skin it reduces the amount of protection the sunscreen provides. The effectiveness of sunscreen is also affected by the wind, humidity and altitide.

Use lip balm or cream that has SPF 30 or higher to protect your lips from getting sunburned or developing cold sores.

Use a higher SPF at higher elevations or in tropical climates.

Remember to include sunscreen to your daily skin care routine and you will be on your way to healthier, younger-looking skin.

Schedule now for your free consultation! Offering buy 1, get 1 free on chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning.

The Benefits of Exfoliation

Believe it or not winter is fast approaching, which means icy winds and freezing temperatures making our skin an aesthetic nightmare. It can be dry, flaky and dull. It can be difficult to maintain a radiant complexion during this season.

Exfoliation has many different benefits. As well as promoting skin cell renewal it will improve the quality and tone of your skin, making it look healthy and fresh. Exfoliation can be used to improve many different skin types. It can be used to help treat acneic, aging, dry/dehydrated skin, and can also be used to treat hyperpigmentation.

Some interesting facts: The skin is the largest organ of the body, and produces approximately one million skin cells every minute. This equals to over 5 billion skin cells per day! This is why the need for proper exfoliation is important when it comes to maintaining and enhancing the quality of your skin.

In addition, exfoliation enables your skin care products to work more effectively and less is needed to achieve your desired result.

Don't miss our buy one, get one free special on chemical peels, microdermabrasion or dermaplaning.
